Senior Mechanical Designer
2302 Rd 125, St. Marys, ON N4X 1C9, Canada
The Opportunity:
If your best work happens when you have real ownership — when you can take a problem from concept through production and see it built — this is the role for you.
Work Arrangement: Full-Time — Fully On-site — your designs are built here, and the shop floor is part of your workspace.
Compensation:
This is a salaried position with a range of $75K–$105K depending on experience, plus a comprehensive benefits package. We believe in paying fairly for genuine expertise.
About Us:
All-Equip is a family-owned manufacturer with a genuine entrepreneurial spirit: if it moves, hauls, or solves a problem in the transportation sector, we’ll find a way to build it. Founded in 2011, we’ve grown into a recognized leader in both trailer manufacturing and heavy equipment repair and service — and it’s that repair experience that gives us a real edge. We’ve seen what fails in the field, what holds up under pressure, and what the competition consistently gets wrong. That knowledge is baked into every product we build. It’s why our trailers outperform — and it’s why the people who build them matter.
The Role:
As our Senior Mechanical Designer, you’ll be drawing on something better than data: the accumulated, hands-on knowledge of a team that has built, repaired, and learned from years of seeing what survives the field — and what doesn’t.
In a typical week, you’ll split your time between focused design work in CAD, time on the shop floor validating designs and working through production challenges, and collaborative sessions with the team of developing engineers you’ll be guiding. It’s a role that suits people who like to see their work through from first sketch to finished product.
Key Responsibilities:
- Own the end-to-end design of grain and specialty trailers — chassis, suspension, structural systems — from concept through production-ready release.
- Build and maintain high-quality 3D CAD models and manufacturing drawings in Onshape, setting the standard for how design is documented at All-Equip.
- Take requirements from customers, the field, and the shop floor and translate them into clean, buildable designs.
- Apply and interpret transport, safety, and load standards — understanding the reasoning behind the requirements, not just ticking boxes.
- Partner directly with our production team to optimize designs for. manufacturability, reducing cost and complexity in the build process.
- Take ownership of educating and supporting a team of developing. engineers — creating a culture of shared learning, passing on hard-won knowledge, and raising the standard of the whole team’s work.
- Participate hands-on in design reviews, prototyping, and real-world testing — you’ll have direct visibility into how your designs perform.
- Identify and champion improvements to our products and design processes — if you see a better way, we want to hear it.
- Spend time on the shop floor to validate designs and resolve production issues — hands-on engagement is a feature of this role, not an exception.
What We Offer
Real creative ownership: meaningful input on product direction and design process — you’ll shape how things are done, not just execute a spec
Direct connection to your work: the shop floor is steps away — you’ll watch your designs go from model to metal
Low bureaucracy: family-owned means decisions get made, good ideas find traction, and your contributions are visible
Deep specialization in a high-demand niche: agricultural trailer design is specialized, durable expertise — here, you’ll build more of it
Career Path:
- We’re actively building out our engineering function, and this hire will help shape what that looks like. This role carries real influence — over product direction, team development, and how engineering works at All-Equip. If leading the engineering team is where you want to go, that’s a conversation we’re ready to have from day one.
Qualifications & Experience:
- 5+ years of mechanical design experience in heavy transportation, trailers, or similar industries.
- Strong hands-on experience with structural design, weldments, and sheet metal fabrication.
- Proficiency in Onshape or comparable parametric CAD software, experience building and maintaining a clean model library is a plus.
- Deep understanding of manufacturing processes — cutting, forming, welding, machining — and how design decisions drive shop-floor outcomes.
- Solid command of GD&T and engineering drawing standards.
- Practical assembly intuition: a feel for fit, function, and real-world constraints that comes from time spent on or near the floor.
- Ability to structure CAD models and drawings so they accurately reflect how things are built and assembled — not just how they look in the model.
- Familiarity with materials, load calculations, and durability considerations for heavy-duty applications.
- Strong problem-solving instincts and attention to detail — you find the flaw before production does.
- Able to manage multiple projects and priorities independently, while keeping the broader team informed and aligned.
Education:
- Post-secondary education in mechanical engineering or related field.
